Milpas florecientes: el cuidado respetuoso
Speaker: Gabriel G. Roman - Université libre de Bruxelles / EHESS
Dates: 16 April 2026
Venue: Espacio Alternativo Don Kos – Tamazulápam del Espíritu Santo - Oaxaca, Mexico
After completing his doctoral thesis based on fieldwork in Tamazulápam, Gabriel G. Roman returned to the community to present his research in Spanish to local researchers, teachers, activists, and students. Hosted at Don Kos Espacio Alternativo, the event was conceived as a space for dialogue, collective reflection, and exchange around themes central to community life in the Sierra Mixe, including maize cultivation, territorial identity, and the relationships between humans and deities.
Members of the CCREA collective participated as discussants, offering their perspectives on the thesis and on the contemporary challenges facing the community portrayed in the research. The presentation was followed by an open discussion in which participants shared questions, reflections, and experiences, collectively exploring how to foster a future in which both maize and community life can continue to flourish together.
