Care and respect in the Mixe milpas: ethnographic explorations of maize cultivation in Tamazulápam del Espíritu Santo

Abstract

Gabriel G. Roman (ULB and EHESS) will present his ethnographic research on maize cultivation in Tamazulapam del Espíritu Santo, Oaxaca. Thanks to 18 months of field work, Gabriel G. Roman shows how through the practices of këwent'äjt, care, and jëntsë'ëky'äjt, respect, that many farmers continue to maintain their diverse seeds, with whom they have formed a bond affective, and that allow the Mixe milpa to flourish and their maize to abound.
